Fees vary depending on the type, complexity and scale of the mediation.
In the UK, mediation fees are not fixed. They are influenced by factors such as the value of the dispute, the number of parties involved, and the level of preparation required.
Industry guidance and schemes such as those set by the Civil Mediation Council demonstrate that costs can range from lower fixed fees for small claims through to full-day rates for more complex disputes.
£750 – £1,250 per party (full day)
This reflects standard UK market rates for independent civil and commercial mediators, where a typical full day mediation is charged at around £1,500 total and shared between parties. In civil and commercial mediation, fees are usually shared between the parties.
Please note fees may increase where:
- The dispute value is higher
- There are multiple parties
- Additional mediators, preparation or extended time is required
£750 – £1,500 per day
£150 – £200 per hour (if applicable)
Workplace mediation is usually funded by the organisation and often includes:
- Pre-mediation meetings
- The mediation session
- Follow-up support where appropriate
£130 – £170 per person per hour
This reflects guidance from the Family Mediation Council, where average mediation costs sit within this range. Fees are typically charged per person and may involve a series of shorter sessions.
Fees will vary depending on:
- The number of people involved
- The value and complexity of the dispute
- The level of preparation required
- Whether pre-mediation meetings are needed
- The length and format of the session (half day / full day / multiple sessions)
Mediation is designed to provide a cost-effective alternative to escalation.
By comparison, legal proceedings can run into thousands or significantly more depending on the nature of the dispute. Mediation offers a more controlled, timely, and proportionate way to resolve issues before they reach that stage.
